Ala-Kul is genuinely demanding — this isn't a gorge walk with a scenic payoff at the end, it's a real mountain trek.
The single-day option covers over 20km round trip with roughly 1,400m of elevation gain to a pass above 3,800m, done in one long push — 10-12 hours is typical, and it requires solid cardiovascular fitness and comfort with steep, loose terrain near the pass. The 3-day version spreads the same distance (plus a crossing into Altyn Arashan valley) across more manageable daily stretches, which is the better choice for most trekkers who aren't specifically training for endurance days.
Altitude is the other factor — see our separate guide on altitude and altitude sickness if this will be your first time trekking above 3,500m.
