Suusamyr Valley: Kyrgyzstan's High Summer Pasture

Suusamyr is a wide alpine valley on the Bishkek–Osh highway, used for centuries as summer pasture — in the warmer months it fills with yurt camps and grazing herds against a backdrop of surrounding peaks.

In summer, the valley is a horseback-riding and yurt-camp day trip from Bishkek, about 2.5-3 hours each way. In winter, the same general area becomes one of Kyrgyzstan's backcountry ski touring hubs, with dedicated lodges and guided freeride terrain — see our separate freeride & backcountry skiing tour for that version.

It's a good stop if you're already driving the Bishkek-Osh road, or a worthwhile dedicated day trip on its own from Bishkek.
