Torugart is one of two land crossings between Kyrgyzstan and China (the other being Irkeshtam, further south near Osh) and the classic route for travelers continuing overland along the Silk Road toward Kashgar.
Unlike most border crossings, Torugart requires an advance permit arranged before you travel — this typically needs to be requested well ahead of your crossing date, and the crossing simply won't happen without it. This is the single most important thing to plan for.
Naryn is the natural staging point, 4-5 hours from the pass itself. Public transport doesn't reliably reach the border post, so nearly everyone arranges a private transfer for this leg.
You'll typically need separate arrangements on the Chinese side to continue past the border — this isn't something we handle, so plan that leg through a China-side operator or agency in advance.
